I have to say, I really like the location of house number 1. With that said, it looks like it will need a lot of work, in the backyard and interior, and worst of all it is 50 grand more.
My vote would have to be for house number 2. Hopefully you could talk them down a bit in price, but probably not as much as you'd like. The interior looks nice, the kitchen looks sweet, I really like that deck in the back, and the landscaping overall, though the yard doesn't look that large.
These can't be the only two you have to choose from. I need more choices, closer to the downtown, the U, or closer to trax.
p.s. thanks to dan for the links, the author of this blog is getting lazy.
I would say Option #2 because it would balance out the Sugarhouse distribution. However, knowing you, I recommend Option #1 because 1. The neighborhood there is great. 2. Its within walking distance of at least two of your frequented coffee shops, whereas there are none on the east side of Sugarhouse.
#2 looks prettier (and somehow bigger) on the inside. Nice backyard. I think I like #1s aesthetic more, although I hear new homebuyers in that are are really sketchy folks. ;) I'd say #1 except it seems pricey by comparison.
I think that although it is $50k more than number 2, the first house is my pick. The location is awesome. The front porch is aces. You can put a garden, a dog run and/or a horseshoe pit in the backyard. It feels more comforable. The wood paneling in the upstairs bedroom is reminiscent of Club Dirty. The kitchen has a gas range. The fireplace and mantle make me want to throw a robe on and smoke a pipe while reading the paper and having the dog fetch my slippers.
